Over the course of 29 years of professional work, I have taught more than a thousand students. Each of them was different, but certain principles always prove effective.
First of all, it is essential to listen carefully and truly get to know the student: what they enjoy, what motivates them, what they are good at, what learning strategies they already use, and what their strengths and weaknesses are. Building an emotional connection and providing a sense of safety are fundamental — my natural curiosity about people helps me achieve this.
Secondly, it is important to create attractive and engaging learning materials tailored to each individual student. Some learners enjoy challenges, while others have a shorter attention span. Lessons work best when they relate to a student’s interests — whether that is biology, psychology, sport, animals, reading, or something else entirely. Personality and temperament matter. If a student has a clear goal, that is excellent; if not, we define one together, because having a goal is essential.
Along the way, patience, systematic revision, and regular progress checks are crucial. Students should be praised often — there is always something to praise. Loving what you do is key, and I am fortunate to be able to say that I do. Although I sometimes fear humanity, I am fascinated by our diversity, the potential of the human brain, and our capacity to learn.
Recently, I decided to bring my own learning experience into my teaching and began learning Spanish myself. I had previously tried Russian, French, and German, but Spanish truly captured my heart because I know it will change my life. I want to support beginners by teaching from the perspective of a fellow learner.
